Saturday 29th February/Sunday 1st March – Open Triples Competition

It was a great weekend with close matches in the majority of cases.

Tina, Mike & Steve G played Richard D, Richard H & Kevin K in one semi final with the latter coming out on top; and Ange, Laurence & Dawn played Tricia, Barry & Teresa , again with the latter winning.  It should be one of the ‘hot’ finals at the competition weekend in April.

Well done to Ange for making the chilli and all the accompaniments – excellent.  Thanks to everyone who helped clearing up and washing up over the weekend as well as those behind the bar.  Great teamwork all round!

John Goddard – A Pillar of Strength and Courage to the End – Updated with Funeral Details

It is with great sadness that we learned John Goddard passed away on 21st January. Both he and Jill had been longtime members of the club supporting the bowling and social nights – they were great quizzers!  John supported Jill’s valuable work for the RNLI.
In recent years he had been diagnosed with cancer but his strength and positive attitude was a credit to his desire to carry on living despite the poor prognosis.

John was a pretty decent bowler indeed, and although he had to give up in 2019, he still had a good result for his team at the Skittles evening in October!  He and Jill came to the Christmas Party at the club and spent time with their bowls’ friends.  John said he had no complaints – he’d had a very good life, a wonderful family and experienced a long and enjoyable retirement . He said his only regret was that he would leave Jill behind.

Our deepest sympathies go to Jill who looked after John until it was time for him to join our other friends in the Great Bowls Club in the Sky.

Please email jillgoddard338@btinternet.com if you will be attending, so she can have an idea of numbers attending.
Thank you.

Saturday 25th January – L&SC Shield and Drawn Triples Comp Update

After a fantastic win on Saturday 11th v Herga by 71-70, the men are now faced with Whiteknights in the next round on Saturday 25th January at 10.00 am – two rinks home and two away.  Whiteknights have some internationals in their club so they maybe playing.  Our chaps will have their work cut out even if the international stars don’t play!  However, on paper, I doubt we would have been expected to beat Herga, so you never know what may happen!

Please come along to either venue to support the team.

As a result, Ange has kindly moved the Club Triples Competition to Saturday 15th February which is a clear date as the Egham U25s & Friends had to cancel their fixture.

Despite the away teams losing v Herga, it just shows that every single shot counts.  Norman’s team picked up a few shots in the last couple of ends and Peter managed an incredible shot on the final end when they were four down and he connected perfectly with the jack taking it back for shot.  The Herga skipped try to remove Peter’s bowl but took his own back bowls out leaving CP with 2 shots.  Needless to say, the boys were over the moon with the result, having been completely whopped by Herga in the Denny Cup in 2018.

Sunday 9th February at 10.00 am – Advance Notice – Under 25s National Competition!

We are very fortunate to be hosting (as a neutral green) the Essex v Hampshire Under 25s Double Rink National Competition Quarter-final at the club.

Play starts at 10.00 am and this will be a brilliant opportunity to see some of the country’s top youngsters playing in very close proximity to spectators and all for free!

Please feel free to bring any friends/neighbours to come and watch too – especially if they’re young.  You never know, it might just change their perception of the age one needs to be to play bowls!

Potters Tour Review – at last!

Wow, what a week we had!  For the third year running, we’ve had a team in the Finals – Ann H, Dave Pitt, Roy B & Terry Pugh – although three of Ann’s team did come under the Cambridge Park “& Friends” mantle!  Theyw ere up against an incredibly strong team in the final from Erewash skippered by young international Russ Robinson.

But that wasn’t our only success ….. Bob & Frances D accompanied by their Bishop Duppas team members Carole & Ray K beat the Disability Bowls England that whopped Mike, Tina, Laurence & Dawn last year.  Bob played a shot you can only dream of on the final end to force the extra end.  Well, blow me down, but he only went and did it again with his final bowl and the DBE skip just pulled up short.  After a short Christmas Dinner where they didn’t want to over indulge, they went on to play the semi-final but couldn’t quite pull it together.  Still, it was a fantastic effort.

For the rest of us, we had a couple of teams that unfortunately didn’t win any of their matches then all the others won one, two or three out of the four matches.  It was all good fun and the international and bowlers’ bar greens play differently.  Quite a lot was down to finding the green quicker than your opponents.

Off the green, Laurence donned is Extra Curricular Activity Capt and organised Table Tennis, Table Football and Indoor Kurling competitions.

In a repeat of last year’s final, the outcome changed and John D (who came prepard with his 50 year old bat!) managed to beat Dave P.

Other winners were Laurecne & Wilma in the Table Football and Dave P & Terry P in the main Jurling Competition with Joan & Bernard winning the Plate competition in fine fashion!

Random photos below – but have run out of time again, so I’m afraid they’re a bit haphazaard!
