Competition Updates

Well done to everyone who played today.

It was wins for Laurence & Kevin in the Whisky Pairs, Cathy in the Champion of Champions; and Sarah, Ange & Dawn in the Triples.

Jean plays Tina Cooper at Bishop Duppas at 2.00 pm on Friday.  Steve and Norman are back on the green at 4.00 pm with the Senior Men’s Pairs and at 6.00 pm, Cathy & Dawn will  be playing in the Middlesex Singles.  Supporters are always welcome at either venue.

Sarah, Ange & Dawn will be competing in the semi-final of the Ladies’ Triples at Bishop Duppas on Sunday at 10.00 am.  It would be nice to be playing in the final afterwards, but we’re just taking one game at a time.

On Saturday, it’s the Middlesex League v Sunbury at home at 2.30 pm

On Sunday morning at 10.30, Jean & Norman take on Ashley & Tina C in the National Mixed Pairs.  In the afternoon, it’s one of the few club competitions this season, the Carter Cup.  Just a reminder that Ploughman’s ‘Supper’ has been booked for all the players and Ann just needs to know if there are extras beside Ranjani.

Thanks

Whisky Wednesday – Update

If I’ve got this right, Norman & Steve take on Laurence & Kevin in the Middlesex Whisky Pairs this afternoon at MIDDAY, not 2.00 pm. As this particular competition doesn’t result in a National, the format should be 21 ends and 4 bowls each.  This is luxury compared to the other pairs competitions which are 3 bowls each and 18 ends!  Mind you, it’s going to be a scorcher, so all four players plus any supporters and spectators need suncream and a hat and water!

Do the winners buy the whisky or do they make the losers drink whisky?  How did this competition come about?  Anyone know?

At 2.30 pm, Cathy plays Pauline Rush from Hampton in the Champion of Champions competition, marked by Jean.

Then at 6.00 pm, it’s the Middlesex Ladies Triples Quarter-Final between Cathy, Nadine & Ann v Sarah, Ange & Dawn.  We are all anticipating a good close match.

Another one to remember today is that the grass and weed pollen count is high, so take your antihistamines before you go out with your refillable bottle of water, your suncream, your  hat, your face covering and sanitiser!

Thank you to Gym who potted the second fuschia.  I see some other small bedding plants have appeared so thank you to him and/or anyone else who is helping the garden flourish.

Updates!

There were wins for Jean, Cathy & Dawn in the Middlesex Championships and Laurence & Gordon (on the 19th end – wow!) in the Senior Pairs!  Well done to all.

The nexxt round of the MIddlesex Singles is on Friday, when Jean will play Tina away at Bishop Duppas and Dawn will play Cathy at home at 6.00 pm  Steve G & Norman have a Middlesex Pairs that afternoon, I think, and the Friday roll up will follow.  Busy, busy, busy!

The Ladies’ Walker Cup teams were announced and Cambridge Park were fortunate to have 5 named.  I’m not sure if this puts extra pressure on us or on those from individual clubs also in the teams.

Cathy, Nadine, Rose (from Rosedale) & Ann H

Hannah (from Bush Hill Park), Dawn, Sue B (from West Ealing) and Mandy S (from Ladygate)

Reserves:  Sue Apperley (Bush Hill Park) and Jean S

The first round of the Walker Cup will be on Sunday 27th June v Oxfordshire at 1.30 pm at Banbury Chestnuts in Banbury, no less!

The Johns’ Trophy Squad isn’t going to be announced until 22nd June.

Staines were also struggling for a team, so the match will now be 2 triples on Thursday.  Well done to David H for saving it.

Diary for w/c 6th June

Sunday 6th June – Ladies Two Bowl Singles – Dawn lost in the first round.  Audrey, Ange and Marie lost in the second round and Ann lost on the last end in the third round .. to Tina C, so for the first time in many years, Cambridge Park won’t be in the quarter-finals of this county competition.  Boo hoo!

Sunday 6th June:  Despite Laurence’s rink winning 38-4 over Peter Twells’ rink, we lost the match overall.  I would be lying if I didn’t say the Chertsey captain was somewhat ecstatic!

Advance notice:  Laurence will be running a Mens and a Ladies Championship.  There will be a sign up list on the board this week – by Wednesday.  Depending on how many entries there are, will determine if we have play on dates or play by dates.

We hope that Ange will also run another BBQ Pairs later on in the season.  We must be very nice to her and Scott!

Gold Stars to the Red Shirts!

  1. We had a great day at the Johns Trophy & Walker Cup trials. Trevor cut the green early this morning and Terry set it up for us.  Top dogs were definitely Norman and Sarah who did a brilliant job with making cups of tea/coffee, sorting out the food, clearing up and washing up and being hospitable and helpful ALL DAY!   It made such a difference to the day leaving us to concentrate on bowling. The Middlesex Executive were highly complimentary about the hospitality from the Club by the three in their red centenary shirts & Jane working the bar too.  Thank you so much.

Having had a warm up with most of us playing two matches today, some of us are off to the Two Bowls Singles Competition tomorrow at Ashford, West Ealing, Bush Hill Park.  Several of the other CP players are taking on Chertsey in the afternoon where no doubt Norman will be excelling in winding the opposition up and taking their minds off the bowling!

We learned that Norman & Steve G had a brilliant win against Ashley & Matt L from Ashford (both in Middleton Cup Squad) last night and we hope this is the start of a long run for them in the Men’s Pairs.

Middlesex Ladies Come to Cambridge Park Today

We are very pleased to be hosting the Middlesex Ladies Johns Trophy and Walker Cup Squad Trials today.  Two matches of 15 ends each, one starting at 10.00 am and the other at 1.30 pm

Cambridge Park are well represented in the trials with  Ange, Ann H, Cathy,  Jacquie, Janice, Jean, Marie, Nadine, and Dawn all hoping to play their best within their teams as well as individually to secure one of the 24 playing or reserve places in the Johns Trophy and/or one of the 8 in the Walker Cup.

The bar will be open from 11.30 and tea/coffee will also be available, so it would lovely if some of you could pop in and give all the Middlesx ladies some support.  Suncream is probably needed but not your umbrella from yesterday!

In the Middlesex Singles Championship, Ange, Cathy, Dawn and Jean are through to the next round to be played on Monday.  Ange and Jean face each other in a home tie, whilst Cathy is heading off to Staines and Dawn to Bishop Duppas.

Congratulations!

The sun beat down upon us yesterday at the Middlesex  v Bedfordshire match.  It was only 3 rinks but it was brilliant to get out on the green with friends from the other side of MIddlesex for the first time since summer 2019.

Everyone enjoyed the bowls and the hospitality provided by Bush Hill Park BC.

At the end of the match, Middlesex awarded 5 ladies either their Colts’ or their Full County Badge, including our own Ange!

Ange and I were on the same rink and we both had reasonable games.  Fran Knight (plays at Greenwich and who was responsible for sending Kevin L to us when he moved over this side of the county) and Wanda from North London made up our team.  We didn’t get top rink, but we did win by 9 shots, so a good start to the County season especially as Middlesex won the match overall.

Congratulations also to Dave Pitt who has been selected for the Middlesex Middleton Cup Team.  The men play Kent on 10th July at 10.00 am at Essex County BC.

The ladies Johns’ team also plays Kent on 10th July but we won’t know if any of the Cambridge Park ladies have been selected until after the trials this Saturday at Cambridge Park.  We’re playing both morning and afternoon if anyone wanted to come along and watch.  (No heckling please!!)

Sunday 6th June – Mixed Friendly v Chertsey

Teams for Sunday.  Some of you are trying out new positions.  It’s a friendly, so give it a go.  It’s a good chance to learn more about the game.

Joan O’N, Roy, Jean & Norman

Bernard, Corale, Stella K & Richard H

Steve P, Gordon, Teresa & Kevin

Brian, Ray, Lucy & Laurence

Captain:  Norman (and, as Chertsey, is his former club, be prepared for lots of banter across the rinks!)

Whites with Centenary/Club shirts

Well Done Gals and Commiserations Guys!

Well done to Nadine, Cathy & Ann who beat the Staines’ triple and to Sarah, Ange & Dawn winning their triples against Fordbridge Park.  They are now both through to the quarter-finals next Wednesday, 9th at 6.00 pm …. playing each other. Oh drat.  No pressure then!

Commiserations to Laurence and Kevin who played their Pairs away at Strawberry Hill.  Our roving reporter said the boys took a few ends to find the green and valiantly fought to catch up, but ran out of ends.  Not having four bowls each also didn’t help!!

Today, Ange and Dawn play in the County match v Bedfordshire over at Bush Hill Park.  This will be Ange’s first county match and she will receive her Colts’ badge.  More at her second match!

Our Ladies are out again in force on Thursday with the first round of the Middlesex Singles with some playing at home and some away at various times of the day.

Indoor Roll Ups

As I gather some of you may have not realised, the indoor section is open again with regular roll ups 10.00-12.00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays being run by Wilma.

At the moment, play is limited to 6 per rink and I’m sure you’re all familiar with the hand sanitising, equipment disinfecting and social distancing!

The changing rooms are limited to no more than two people at a time and loo areas (not cubicles!), one person at a time.

Jane is at the club most lunchtimes in addition to outdoor match occasions, so you would be able to purchase your green fee tickets from her then.

Enjoy!
