Day 4 – Tier 2 (not that we’re counting on anything)

Starting with some sad news on this wet and grey morning.

Carol Bottright lost her battle with the brain tumour which was diagnosed in August.  A very elegant lady with a certain aura about her who you could not fail to like.  In turn, she exuded a great warmth towards everyone she met.  She had not been playing bowls all that long but found a natural bent for the indoor game and was not averse to a bit of bantering and laughter on and off the indoor green. I know Carol’s roll up friends will miss her.

Her daughter emailed to say that Carol’s bowls had been left to the club, which was a really kind gesture.    We send her daughter and family our deepest sympathies.

On a more positive note, Ray P had a successful op last week and George H is now home after a short spell in hospital but he must have enjoyed his stay so much, he’s heading off there again this morning.  Get well George!  We’re thinking of you.

Book Reviews

Anybody have any recommendations for a book they’ve enjoyed that others might like too?  Now the nights are drawing in, it’s a good chance to curl up with a good book, until we get back on the green.

I recently finished The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman.  The writing wasn’t how I expected it.  I don’t really know what I was expecting, except perhaps more longer words!  Anyway, it was a good read and interesting plot with strong characters.  It revolved around a residential care home, so maybe something we are looking forward to!  It was a good pace and had some very good laughs in it too.  I’m not giving anything away here!

4* from me.

Day 3 – Tier 2

Having put heads together and taking some advice, we hope to have an update on playing indoors in the next couple of days.  Fingers crossed.

I was reading on a post on Worldwide Facebook page, that there are bowlers out there living in a Tier 2 area who cannot bowl because their club is in Tier 1.   How frustrating is that?  There are others who haven’t bowled all year as their clubs have been closed or closed down.  That is very sad.  As I said on Saturday, we have to count our blessings.

Temperatures in our area are reputed to reach 19C today, so a good day for fresh air!

Day 2 of Tier 2

Bedding in the washing machine, an hour’s walk done, and what next?  Dusting?  Hoovering? Baking? Singing? Reading?  Listening to the radio?  Plenty of choice of course.  Even if we don’t want to do any of those things, we can still count our blessings on what we have and still can do.

If you live on your own, the next few weeks are going to seem long especially as the daylight hours are shorter.  I was reading* yesterday that the Danes go out for a walk every day.  Friluftsliv is the word and translates to “free air life”.  They say being outside is proven to increase levels of happiness and wellbeing.  I would agree with that.  There’s a good chance of seeing another person even if you just walk down your street.  Make eye contact and smile as you pass 2m apart.  Go a bit further and say “Morning” or “Hello”.  They might need that bit of human interaction too and you will have brightened yours as well as someone else’s day.   Twelve months ago you would have been given a non-virus related wide berth, but that has changed.  Phew!

*Saturday Times “What it’s like to live Danishly”

Dawn … resisting the urge to now go out and get a Danish pastry!

Hold on to your Horses .. and your Bowls for the Time Being

Following the Board meeting this morning, it has been decided that we will need to close the club down for indoor bowling for the next fortnight from Saturday 17th October in order to meet the current EIBA Guidelines published in yesterday’s post.

Sadly the Borough of Richmond including Cambridge Park will now be on the Tier 2 High Alert Covid Restrictions. We are seeing clarification of the Government Guidelines in relation to the EIBA Guidelines and when we have more information, we will let you know.

Well done to everyone who has played so far.  You have been brilliant in following all the procedures as regards face coverings, sanitising and disinfecting the chairs and tables at the changing stations and enjoying  drinks via the table service.  Thanks to Jane for that.

Stay safe, stay sane (aaargh!), keep handwashing, get out in the fresh air once a day, keep your distancing and keep phoning friends.  We will get through this.

Thanks

Dawn

PS  Anybody got a spare jigsaw?!

What Does being in a Tier 2 High Alert Area Mean?

I hope this helps.  Please do not sit indoors and mope about how awful it will be.  If you wrap up and get out in the fresh air even if it’s only for 15-30 mins, it’s good.  It really does make you feel better.  Pick up the phone and ring a friend.  They might be feeling despondent and a friendly voice and sharing thoughts will be good for both of you. “A problem shared is a problem halved”  Remember that one?!

Keep up the handwashing and face covering.  In fact put the face covering on and sit in front of a mirror.  See what faces and expressions you can make with just the upper part of your face.  Can anyone of you do a Roger Moore one eyebrow lift?! Put some eye make up on – anyone can do this too.  Make yourself laugh!

Local COVID alert level: high

This is for areas with a higher level of infections where some additional restrictions are in place.

This means on top of restrictions in alert level medium:

  • you must not socialise with anybody outside of your household or support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place
  • you must not socialise in a group of more than 6 outside, including in a garden or other spaces like beaches or parks (other than where specific exemptions apply in law)
  • businesses and venues can continue to operate, in a COVID-secure manner, other than those that remain closed in law
  • certain businesses are required to ensure customers only consume food and drink while seated, and must close between 10pm and 5am
  • businesses and venues selling food for consumption off the premises can continue to do so after 10pm as long as this is through delivery service, click-and-collect or drive-through
  • schools, universities and places of worship remain open
  • weddings and funerals can go ahead with restrictions on the number of attendees
  • exercise classes and organised sport can continue to take place outdoors; these will only be permitted indoors if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with people they do not live with or share a support bubble with, or for youth or disability sportYou must:

    You should continue to:

    • follow social distancing rules
    • work from home where you can effectively do so
    • walk or cycle where possible, or plan ahead and avoid busy times and routes on public transport
  • Meeting family and friends

You must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting unless you live with them or have formed a support bubble with them. This includes private homes, and any other indoor venues such as pubs and restaurants.

support bubble is where a household with one adult joins with another household. Households in that support bubble can still visit each other, stay overnight, and visit public places together.

Informal childcare can also be provided via childcare bubbles. Find out more about childcare bubbles in the ‘Childcare’ section below.

You may continue to see friends and family you do not live with (or have not formed a support bubble with) outside, including in a garden or other outdoor space. When you do so, you must not meet in a group of more than 6. This limit of 6 includes children of any age.

Meeting in larger groups is against the law. There are certain exceptions (see below). The police can take action against you if you meet in larger groups. This includes breaking up illegal gatherings and issuing fines (fixed penalty notices).

You can be fined £200 for the first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400. If you hold, or are involved in holding, an illegal gathering of over 30 people, the police can issue fines of £10,000.

Thursday 15th October – EIBA Updated Guidelines on New Lockdown Tiers vis a vis Indoor Bowls

The Cambridge Park Board have an emergency meeting planned for 11.00 am Friday 16th October and we will update you further after that.

In the meantime …..

NEW LOCAL COVID ALERT LEVELS
WHAT IT MEANS TO INDOOR BOWLS CLUBS

With the Government introducing a 3 tier system from 14th October 2020 to control COVID-19 the following will apply to Indoor Bowls: –

Tier One – MEDIUM RISK

For Clubs in an area of medium risk there are no further actions required from the EIBA’s last Guidance of 26th September 2020.

Organised sport can continue to take place indoors for up to 6 people per rink.

If you have members or visitors who live in a high risk area, they are able to play but only with people from their same household / support bubble.

Club bars and restaurants are permitted to be open, but with table service only, between the hours of 5am to 10pm. Bowls can be played beyond 10pm.

Tier Two – HIGH RISK

For Clubs in an area of high risk there are changes required.

Only people from the same household / support bubble will be permitted to take part in organised indoor sport, as long as there is no interaction with other households in the club.

Club bars and restaurants can remain open between the hours of 5am to 10pm but are only allowed to have people from the same household / support bubble on a table.

Tier Three – VERY HIGH RISK

For Clubs in an area of very high risk there are changes required.

Only people from the same household / support bubble will be permitted to take part in organised indoor sport, as long as there is no interaction with other households in the club.

However, individual local authorities in conjunction with the Government could agree additional interventions which may include not allowing any indoor sport to take place.

Club bars and restaurants will not be allowed to open.

To see which level of risk applies to your Club / home please use the Government’s post code tracker https://www.gov.uk/find-coronavirus-local-restrictions  or https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus and then go to the “Guidance and support”/Local COVID Alert Levels” section.

Ann & Archie Dale are once again offering coaching on Saturday or Sunday mornings (day to be decided) from 10.00 am – 12.00 pm to those brand new to bowling, or those new to Cambridge Park and indoor bowling, and/or those who wish to brush up on their skills to improve all round.

If you think we/they could help you, please let us know – either by email dawnslaughter60@icloud.com or by signing up at the Club.  (Notice will go up tomorrow – Thursday)

Depending on how quickly people want to join in and numbers, we will then fix a start date.  Hopefully it will be by the end of the month (unless there’s a half-term-national-lockdown, of course!).

Thanks

We all know this is (and will be) an odd season.  We are very fortunate in being able to adapt the facilities to play indoors at all.  There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make it happen.    Membership forms and subscriptions are coming in gradually, so we’re not all sure who is playing yet.  David H is collating all the league information and we should have more news about that later in the week.

If you could bear in mind that we have been open less than a fortnight now, so it is taking a while to get things up and running.

Thanks

Dawn

PS  It could all change at 6.00 pm tonight with the next announcements from the government, but fingers crossed we’ll still be able to play.
