Christmas Eve – Morning Roll Up as Usual Today

Twas the morn before Christmas and all through the club

Not a creature was stirring, not there nor the pub.

The stockings were hung as in days of old

In the hope that Santa would fill them with bowls.

The bowlers were all snuggled tight in their beds

Whilst dreams of hotshots soared through their heads…..

When you awake from those dreams, I hope you manage to do all you need to do today.  At least most of you will have had the sprouts going on the hob since October, so they’ll be nicely done by tomorrow!  One job off the list!

Enjoy your Christmas Eve roll up.  I’m not sure if Dancer & Prancer will be there.  I know they made an appearance at the club recently.  Gordon will pour your last round of drinks at 1.45 pm and the club will closed from 2.00 pm until 11.00 am on Monday., when Ange’s Cottage Pie & Prosecco Bowls takes place. Bowls starts at 12.00 midday for a couple of hours followed by the meal – on well spaced out tables.

Christmas Eve – it’s getting lighter for a couple of minutes each day.  Hoo-bloomin’-ray!

Christmas is … A Time for Giving

Giving time, giving a present, giving to people or organisations that would welcome the odd £5 if you can spare it.

Yet again, Gill and Peter Chapman have been up and down ladders to light up their house for the benefit of all those who can get to see it –  in Crane Way, not far from Whitton High Street.  They are collecting for Cancer Research which is close to their and many a person’s heart.  If you can spare £1, £5, £10 or the like, donations can be made to

There’s also a link on the Cambridge Park Facebook page.

Thanks.

Shorts and Flip Flops

My neighbour left his flat in shorts and flip flops this morning, whilst his girlfriend was wrapped up to the nines in wooly hat, gloves, scarf, puffa jacket, boots.  I remarked for him, at least, it must be summer !

Today is the pinnacle of shortest daylight hours as, from tomorrow, it starts getting lighter.  Whoopee!  It’s pitch black out there now, if you haven’t opened your curtains yet.

Looking forward to not driving in the dark all the time on the one hand but, more importantly, hoping you all stay safe and well as we get through the next few months.

PS  My neighbour was heading off to the swimming pool and not just being eccentric!

Christmas Opening Hours (D.V. & Omicron Permitting!)

Christmas comes but once a year … and some years are easier than others!  Last year was pretty awful for most people.  This year should be more relaxed except it probably won’t be with the omicron threat around.  We’ll find ourselves sitting around the edges of the room dressed in winter coats with the windows open to keep the room ventilated, as we did at the office party – but at least we had one!  Nevertheless by this time next weekend, Santa will have delivered all his parcels and we’ll be eating left over turkey – cold, fricassee’d, curried etc., – with bubble and squeak, getting the new jigsaws out, snoozing to The Great Escape and The Sound of Music and waiting until everything returns to normal.

For those who live alone and don’t have family nearby, Christmas can be a particularly difficult time with the days seemingly endless making it very lonely with normal routine activities unavailable.  Don’t be afraid to pick up a phone and ring a friend.

Monday 20th – Friday 24th December

10.00 – 12.00 Morning roll ups as normal

From Friday 24th, Jane will be on annual leave until the new year.  (Have a good rest, Jane!)  Gordon will run the bar on Christmas Eve, but you will need to have finished all your drinks by 1.45 pm, so he can get the glasses in the washer and be out by 2.00 pm.  He just needs to be at home with his family and not because he has another engagement dressing up and going out on a sleigh!

There are no Leagues this week, but if you want to play in the evenings, please use the booking system and let Jane know so she can gauge when to lock up.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day – the Club will be closed.

Monday 27th – Friday 31st December

We will open the club at 9.00 am and it will be locked at 6.00 pm.  Again, if  you want to play in the evenings, please use the booking system and let Ange/Dawn know so we can lock up at an appropriate time.  Apart from 27th, the bar will be closed all week.

Monday 27th – ‘Cottage Pie & Prosecco’ Bowls

We will be there from 11.00 am with bowls from 12.00 – 2.00 pm followed by Ange’s home made Cottage Pie & (not home made) Prosecco.  If you haven’t signed up already and would like the meal, please let Ange know by Thursday latest.  The bar will be open during this event.  There is rugby on, so allow a bit of extra time to get to the club.

New Year’s Day – The Club will Be Closed

Sunday 2nd January 2022

2.00 pm  Australian Pairs.  At the moment we have 7 pairs signed up.  Another one pair or two people would be brilliant.  Please let me know.  dawnslaughter60@icloud.com

More news will follow this week but we all hope that we can stay open and avoid another lockdown.

Christmas Wishes from West Sussex

Thank you for keeping us in touch with all that’s happening at Cambridge Park. Lovely to see the photo’s of your Christmas Party on Sunday. Unfortunately ours down here has been cancelled for obvious reasons. John & I wish everyone at Cambridge Park, especially those who remember us, a good Christmas a healthy 2022.

My indoor club (Arun) are also through to the last 16 of Yetton Plate, who knows we might, one day, play against each other. That would be good.
Take care, and stay safe,
Best wishes,
Sheila & John (Stocker)
We all wish Sheila and John a very Happy Christmas and it would be fantastic to play Arun in one the later rounds of the Yetton Plate, wouldn’t it?  Good luck to Arun on 8th January!

Potters Roadshow at Egham IBC on Sunday 19th December – Christmas Presents?!

Stuck for a Christmas present for a bowler?  Mark Royal has brought the Potters shop Roadshow down to the Open Singles Competition at Egham tomorrow.  It should be open from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm  if Mark gets through to the final which is at 4.00 pm.  Bowls, clothes, shoes, accessories – a full complement of goodies.

It would be worth going to see the matches.  There are some very good players in the competition.  Play starts at 8.30 am – yes 8.30!!  If you go, please wear a face covering unless you’re eating or drinking.  It worked very well today.

If you want a warm up to the OSC matches, Tricia and Teresa play Doreen H and Kylie from Egham at Cambridge Park at 10.00 am at Cambridge Park in the National Ladies Pairs.

Well Done Lads – Absolutely Brilliant!

A great win v Watford this morning.  Everyone at CP played very well.  Thanks to Laurence who ventured onto the green following his knee op.  Hope there are no repercussions over the next couple of days.  We also hope that Brian’s back doesn’t give him further gip after he had to pull out of the match yesterday.

Top rink were Laurie, Peter J, Graham D and Andy Hawes.

Next round is against Egham on 15th January.  Let’s hope that neither this nor the Yetton Plate get postponed if covid numbers increase dramatically over Christmas.
