It’s Not a Dream nor a Nightmare!

It is real rain in buckets, cats and dogs and/or stair rods and would appear like putting up  two fingers to the hosepipe ban imposed yesterday !

Watch out if you’re a pedestrian. Some of those watery bits in the road are very deep and you could get soaked by a passing car.
Watch out if you’re driving too. Those wet patches seem to come out of nowhere if there are no cars in front of you flagging them up!

It’s due to dry up later and for the rest of the weekend, so this is a temporary sojourn into cooler weather.

Hope it’s drier in Leamington. The Bush Hill Park girls and the Ashford Boys start their challenge in the National Triples competitions this morning. Good luck Middlesex! Good luck to all counties. When you get to Leamington, all you want to do is play well and not let you, your club or the County down as well as enjoying the experience.

Bowls England have their own tv channel and their FB page should keep up with results.

Greece – Sun, Sea & a Special Dog!

Many of you will remember Rita Wadge with great fondness. Her daughter, Sharon, used to live in Greece and, like Rita, is animal crackers!

Well, Sharon has written her first novel.

it is available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle format. It has very good reviews and now the nights are beginning to draw in, you may want to cosy up with a good read.
One paperback will be in the Club’s next big raffle and I’m sure Sharon will sign it if you’re the lucky winner!

What About a New Hobby?

Channel 4 is starting a four-part series tonight with Alex Brooker as he goes around the country with a ‘mate’ trying out various new hobbies – three per programme.  It should be a lot of fun and Alex is a tough chap – remember the series when he did the training to swim the channel.  He’s very plucky!

Anwya, on 2nd September, the programme includes bowls – hooray! – with talented Yaz Hasan from Egham joining Alex and friend.

Watch tonight at 9.00 pm (or on catch up during the week on the first episode) and subsequent episodes, but especially the bowls one!  You never know, you might find another hobby to try out – something indoors for those winter months in between indoor bowls.

Young bowler Yaz Hasan is to take centre stage in a new Channel Four series starting next month.

The 19-year-old Egham Bowls Club member will join presenter and comedian Alex Brooker as he tries out a range of the nation’s favourite pastimes in four-part mini-series ‘Hobby Man’ which starts tomorrow (Friday 19th) evening at 8pm.

Special guests join Brooker in each episode with Inbetweeners comedy actor Joe Thomas joining Yaz in episode three which takes in Wiltshire, Berkshire, and London and airs on Friday September 2nd.

Commenting on the exciting project which – coming hot on the heels of the Commonwealth Games – will again put lawn bowls on mainstream TV, Yaz said:

“The main goal for this was to promote the sport and show the country that anyone can play.

“It was an absolute pleasure to film with these two brilliant people – we had such a great time with lots of laughs.

“The most amazing thing is that I have managed to keep this a secret since it was filmed back in April. I was approached to do this while away on holiday in Spain and was really shocked that they asked me!

The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly on the Plain

That may be true, but it was certainly a welcome visitor to West London last night. Almost proper rain!  Anyone go out singing in it?!

The plants in pots still needed watering this morning but I’m sure that shower would have been good for the green and surrounding area.

Many of you are green fingered so how have your gardens faired? Are your tomatoes ripening up fast? Courgettes in danger of becoming marrows? Raspberries and redcurrants  coming on a treat? Rhubarb taking over the beds providing enormous leaves providing shade?

Let us know your garden triumphs and losses over the last couple of months.
There is a life outside of bowls and sometimes it’s good to chat about it.

By the way I saw My Fair Lady a couple of weeks ago, and once we stopped (unwittingly ) comparing the two leads to Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, who were very good indeed, it was an excellent production. The run is stopping soon so get in quick if you’d like to see it. Like most of the theatres now, it was air-conditioned and comfortable. (Take out a mortgage for the ice creams though!)

Tuesday Afternoon Now Free

Unfortunately there weren’t enough Ladies for the Bishop Duppas match for Tuesday so it has been cancelled. Apologies if you were looking forward to it.

This does leave rinks available for those club competitions that need playing!

Tina & Ashley won the Regional Quarter Final yesterday but sadly went down to a strong pair from Essex South. Terrific effort and only 15 other pairs in the country can say they made it that far in the competition. So, we’ll done and be proud!

Middlesex Finals Day – Afters!

A very successful Middlesex Ladies Finals Day in searing heat yesterday.
On the Cambridge Park front, there were wins for Cathy T in Over 55 Singles and Over 55 Pairs with Tina, who also won the Benevolent Triples with Frances Donohue and sub Dawn Slaughter.
Congratulations also to Sarah & Lucy who, after losing the Benevolent Triples final first thing then winning the 2 Bowl Pairs semi-final adn then the final!
Tina & Cathy also played 3 games as they had pairs semis as well as the final. Well done for all of them lasting the pace as well as the heat.
Thanks to Norman,  Cathy, Marie C, Karen g, Mike C, Jane and all the other club members who chipped in to help around the club to make the day enjoyable for all the spectators. The new chairs dropped off by Anthony H and colleague were very well received with the number of spectators we had and thanks to Terry & Paul for the lunchtime catering, enjoyed by all.
Yet again, dutifully yet willingly thanks to Jacquie Elkin and Dee Hardy (and supporting partner, Chas) who lasted the whole day with admin, organisation and reporting. Good to see Brian Hearn in his role as Middlesex President supporting all the girls in another event as well.

Cracking Singles in the Summer Evening

It is a beautiful summer evening with the sun bathing the surrounds of the green in warm, peaceful sunlight.

half a dozen of us are watching a Club Singles between Kevin Conway and Anthony Headland. It was neck and neck for the first 14 ends with Anthony sneaking ahead for the first time 8-7.  15 shots over 14 ends. That tells what sort of game it is.
Anthony increased his lead to 17-11 after 25 ends. Yes 25 ends!  Peter Chapman is marking and he was expecting to be home by now (19:20) and finishing off his supper. No chance!

Kevin had been holding 3 on that 25th end when Anthony snuck his 4th bowl in for shot. Then one head and shoulders dropped and the other stood proud and became more confident!

Well done Anthony. Hard luck Kevin. It really was a great match. 21-11 on paper.
