Pancake Tuesday

Well it’s not really Pancake Tuesday but the boys might be feeling a bit flat following last night’s Middlesex Fours semi-final. It was 8-8 after 8 ends. Then they were 10-14 after 14 ends but Dave P,  John Donaghue, Ray Snelling and Eldred managed to get a couple of 3’s and a 4 and our chaps (Peter T, Scott, Peter J & Laurie) conceded 12-24 after 18 ends.

I saw the first 14 ends and it was certainly a good battle!

Today, Dave P, John D & Ray S are off to Nottingham for the National Finals of the Triples. They’re playing at 6.00 pm and you can watch the live scoring via the EIBA competition page.
Good luck!

A Boost for Cancer Research

From Ann Macey:

To all members who bought raffle tickets, a BIG THANK YOU!

We raised £626.00 for Cancer Research.

1st: Hamper:  Eileen Jolliffe

2nd: Bottle Brandy –  Ann Dale

3rd:  Bathroom Hamper – Joan O’Neill

and multiple other prize winners!

Well done to Peter Twells with his bingo calling and to Ange Banger & Mashing, Tony O’B Rice Pudding-ing with added help from Sarah, Jacquie & Scott in the kitchen.  Jane and Gordon were on their knees from serving all the drinks and there were several smiley faces with successful bingo wins!

Well done to one and all!

Dabbers at the Ready ?

Before we get on to dabbing or dibbing, commiserations to Dave P, Andy K, Ray S & Colin H who were neck and neck against their opponents in the last 16 of the National Over 60s Fours at Nottingham, then fell at the final end.  Hounslow were holding two when the opposition number 3 fired and took nearly every Hounslow bowl off the green! Is that fair?!  Dave said he drew short with his first bowl then tried to run his final bowl to ditch the jack (his only option) but, alas, a thin edge off a short bowl ended up with Hounslow dropping a 5.   Still,, it was a great achievement to get to the last 16 in the country.

The World Bowls Tour is being streamed from Stanley and you can watch on Facebook/YouTube if you want to stay in today to keep out of the cold.

So, onto tonight.  About 50 have signed up for Bingo, Bangers & Beans tonight.  (Oh, and peas for some!)  Peter Twells is practising his Legs Eleven or should it be Cricketers 11, Rugby 15, Bowls Triples, Tennis Doubles now that old fashioned phrasing has been tossed out of the window.  Even on Pointless Celebrities on their bingo round they had Two Fat Ladies as the clue for one statement!

There are still raffle tickets available for the wonderful selection of prizes in aid of Cancer Research.  Ann M has done a fantastic job of pulling together hampers/baskets etc as well as selling tickets.  Thank you Ann and glamorous assistant Terry, as well as everyone who is participating.  It wouldn’t work without you!

For those of you not venturing out this evening, get wrapped up for your trip to the club for Finals Weekend.  Don’t bother with breakfast at home as our caterers will be serving up bacon/sausage rolls etc for breakfast and lunches and snacks available from 09:00 to 15:00 both days.   Although some members are making multiple appearances, there are several new names in the finals.  Well done to all.  It’s good to see everyone playing so well.  The depth of strength in the club has increased no end this season.

See you all later.

Next!

After my exciting trip of reaching the last 16 of the Two Bowls competition, it is time to hand over the West London baton to Dave Pitt, Andy Knott, Ray Snelling and Colin Harman in the Over 60’s Fours in Nottingham.
Their first match is at 09:30 this morning and you can watch the live scoring via the EIBA competition page on their website.
the green is slower and longer than either CP or Hounslow. The bowl finishes but slowly so whatever your brain tells your arm to do normally do, you have to persuade it to add an extra yard.
I watched yesterday morning’s games and even some of the top ranked players found the weight difficult. Just goes to show they are human too!

Well done to Chelsea Tomlin who came from behind to take a win over Nicole Rogers in the Ladies Two Woods, and to Jamie Walker who beat Martin Puckett in the Men’s Two Bowls Final.

Good luck Dave, Andy, Colin & Ray!

Do Your Bowls Need Stamping?

On Wednesday 20th April, Ange & Jacquie E will be heading off to Pershore with bowls that need date stamping.

If you would like them to take your bowls, please leave them at the club just before or just after Easter with your name on.  The list of fees here:- https://www.pershorebc.co.uk/content.asp?id=4

There is the standard fee but if your bowls need any extra tweaking, there will be an added cost.  There will also be a contribution towards petrol money which seems very fair seeing the current price per litre!

Ange & Jacquie are happy to take bowls from other players in the county, so please pass this message on.  The bowls just need to be delivered to Cambridge Park in readiness.

Thanks

World Skating Championships

No, alas, we don’t have any of our members competing in these championships being held in Montpelier!

During the Beijing Winter Olympics we posted a photo of Gerry in his speed-skating days.  He met his wife, Doreen, at Richmond Ice Rink where ice dancing was her speciality.  This week would have seen their 70th wedding anniversary had she lived.

The photo below shows Gerry having swapped his speed skates for the more classical black ones, looking very dapper in his shirt and tie and pausing for a photo with Doreen.  It was a small glide from Richmond Ice rink and the fun they shared there and onto a local bowls green.  Another great hobby!

Thanks for sharing, Gerry.
