Thursday 6th May v Sunbury – Home

In case I haven’t posted this on here already, the teams are:

Brian C, Nadine & skip Norman

Janice, Marie & skip George

Joan, Gordon & skip Richard H

Audrey, Margaret & skip David H

Reserves;   Ray V and Tricia (who will both be playing in Saturday’s game)

Captain:  Norman

2.30 pm start.  Greys.  Come changed!

The club is also a Polling Station so the loo by the main door will be available, but not the changing rooms.

Voters will exit via the dining room, so hopefully will stop to watch the game and encourage them to ask about having a go!  Open Day is Monday 31st May – Bank Holiday and they can turn up from 10.00-12.00 or 2.00-4.00 pm when members will be on hand to show them the basics.

Thanks

Gardening and Plant Donations

We were fortunate enough to have a visit from Mr Squires or Squires Garden Centre yesterday.  They are going to give us two or three rhododendrons to plant as a reminiscence of the garden surrounding the bowls green back in 1921, which is lovely.

He thought the whole outside area a real treasure and had been unaware of its existence until yesterday!  He made the suggestion that not to try and clear the whole of the garden for this month, but to select areas, clear them of ivy/wild garlic then plant some colour – geraniums, primulas, pansies etc.

So, if anyone can offer to help dig up and clear the wild garlic around the first two benches nearest the club house and then one other of the gardens beyond the scoreboard, this would be brilliant.

Secondly, would anyone be able to donate any flowering plants/shrubs/compost we could put into those areas?  We have the County Bannerette next Thursday 12th and then the Centenary Match on Friday 21st May so with those two deadlines hurtling towards us, we need to get a bit of a move on!  I can offer some hours on Sunday afternoon if anyone would like to join me.

Lynde House will also be planting a tree for the Centenary for us.   They are open to suggestions – some of my favourites are flowering cherries, ornamental pear, ‘tulip’ magnolias and acers, but what types of tree would you like to see around the grounds?  It’s your club, well, our club, not just mine!

Please let me know

Thanks

Dawn

Wrap Up!

Well that wind was blowing a hooley last night.  I wouldn’t have liked to be having dinner or a drink even in a pub garden at 9.00 pm!  It’s not surprise that the hospitality industry is asking that indoor dining be opened earlier than 17th May!  However, it might be a lot warmer by then and everyone will want to be outside anyway!

It may be windy today and therefore chilly, but at least it’s sunny.

Windsor & Eton have confirmed 4 Mixed Triples for Saturday which is good.  If you are selected to play, please ensure you have a face covering if you wish to enter the club to use the loos.  The changing rooms will not be available, so we need to go changed.  The most important point is that they are not permitting spectators in the club grounds, so if you are intending to come over, you will only be permitted to watch from the gate.  Still Windsor is a lovely place to walk along the river, see different shops etc.

Bank Holiday Monday – The Second of 2021

Yesterday’s match v Masonians resulted in a draw … from our perspective 2-2.  Masonians considered it a win for them with 69-67 shots across the board!

Wins for Gym, Gordon & Audrey and top rink for Sarah, Lucy & Kevin.  Congratulations!  The rest of us must try harder next time.

Alas the match v Ashford away tomorrow has been cancelled but Sunbury is still going ahead.  Not everyone likes playing away, but it’s good to play on a different green and learn how to adapt to different lines, pace etc.  If we don’t fulfil our away games, then those clubs might not want to come over and play us, resulting in less games.

Isle of Wight Ron had some good news on the medical front yesterday and, as a result, hot-footed onto a ferry across to the Isle of Wight so he can go ‘home’ for a few weeks.  Well done, Ron!

Anyone watch Line of Duty last night?  I haven’t watched this series, but several of my musical theatre friends said the final episode was rubbish but had be praising all the other episodes up until then.  What did you think?

Enjoy your Bank Holiday.  Umbrellas after 3.00 pm!

Rain Forecast for 3.00 pm Today

That’s a bit of a shame as the match v Masonians is due to start shortly after that!  (It’s lovely out now – crisp and sunny.)

It was supposed to be 3 rinks this afternoon but we think it might now be 4 triples to give us an extra bowl each.

Teams:

Sarah, Lucy & skip Kevin

Tricia, Scott & skip Steve

Audrey, Gordon & skip Gym

Ray V, Ange & skip Dawn

Unfortunately Brian C has a bad neck so is now unable to play.  We wish him better soon.

There are only 2 names up for Ashford away on Tuesday.  Please let Norman know asap if you are now available, as we don’t really want to cancel a game.

Thanks

League Arrangements

There are 10 teams in the 2021 league: Teddington x 2, NPL x 2, Strawberry Hill x 1, Hampton x 1, Cambridge Park x 2, Isleworth x 1, Feltham ex-Service x 1

  • The league will be hosted at Cambridge Park Bowls Club and will run from 10th We will normally play on a Monday, except the Bank Holiday weeks when it will play on Tuesdays. It will finish on 6th September, assuming no matches were postponed. The format is triples
  • There will be prizes at the end of the competition, £120 for the winning team, £60 for the runners up. The ‘NPL’ cup will be awarded to the winners
  • Each round, the opening remarks and collection of fees will be done by one of the Cambridge Park skips. The charge for playing in the league will be £3 per person per match
  • Matches will start no later than 2pm, to help avoid later rush-hour traffic. There will be no breaks and we will normally play 18 ends (weather permitting), aiming to finish by 4pm
  • Drinks may be available from the bar (if open), and from the drinks machine. However, as we are affected by Covid regulations, please bring your own refreshments at least for the first few matches of the league. A toilet will be open. If you enter any part of the club indoors area, until covid regulations change please ensure that you wear a mask and, in the toilets, disinfect anything you touch
  • The Cambridge Park teams entered in the competition would be responsible for the setting up and putting away of the match equipment (although any help is always welcome!). All equipment must be disinfected before being put away (e.g. jacks and mats)
  • For the matches on 10th May, there is only allowed to be a maximum of 24 people on the green, i.e. 4 rinks. One of the matches (i.e. 5th rink) for that day will be rearranged to keep within the limits. It is hoped that this restriction will only be until 17th May, but we are awaiting confirmation
  • The League Organiser is David Hale, 07828 184090. Team Captains are responsible for organising their teams. A list of Captains contact details will be circulated separately
  • If a game cannot be played due to a team being short of players on the day, then the opponents will also be awarded 2 points and a shot difference of 8 shots. If the team has just one missing player, then the match can be played but with a penalty. The 2 players team will play with 4 bowls each. The skip on the 3 players team shall play with 2 bowls, the other two players with 3 bowls. The Pair will also lose 25% of their final score, rounded to the nearest point (halves are rounded up). E.g. if they score 22 points, they will lose 5½ shots which is rounded up to 6 shots making an adjusted total of 16 points. If they score 25 shots, they lose 6¼ shots which rounds to 6 shots, so their adjusted score is 19 shots. A game commencing with 2 players on any side may be joined by a third player up to and including the 4th end
  • If a team is short just because one member turns up late, but that member later turns up before the fifth end jack is cast, then the team plays to the above rules until their player arrives and then match continues normally. So, for example, if when their remaining player turns up their score is 6 then they will suffer a 1½ shot penalty which rounds to 2 shots and then the match continues as normal. So, at the end of the game they will have just have suffered a 2 shots penalty. Please note, if a player is running a little late and they ring to say, or it is known traffic is bad, then the start of a match can be delayed to wait for them. Skips will exercise their judgement to ensure fair play in the friendly spirit of the competition

Membership Forms – A Nudge!

Morning!

Just a reminder that Membership Forms are available to download here

210402 – CP Membership Application 2021-2022 – Rev.1

or a paper version can be collected from the round table in the Clubhouse.  They need to be completed and given to Ange or put in the C pigeon hole.  Ange will then issue your invoice for the correct amount for you to pay – by BACs, cheque or in the Club with your Membership Card or debit/credit card and you will then be given a new car park permit!

If you are not paid up members, neither you nor your bowls etc will be covered by the Club insurance.

If you are in contact with those not on email, please could you give them a ring and let them know where to collect a form.  That would be a big help.

The membership has been done by various people over the last few years and the lists vary.  We know some of you have changed your address or car or other details, so we are starting afresh ensuring all the information we hold is up to date and secure.

Thanks

Midweek

Well we’ve been back on the green a few days now.  Are you enjoying it?  How are your muscles?  I hope they’re not aching too much!

The green was playing very well on Saturday – more like the speed of an end May green.  Maybe this will encourage a few indoor bowlers to come and have a go outdoors with a chance to top up the old Vitamin D levels?

The news this morning that even after the first dose of vaccine, you are unlikely to pass the virus on to your family and people to whom you are close is wonderful.  We hope that India in particular can get the programme rolled out there and curb the horrific spread of the virus.  Spare a thought for the famlies and the medical teams battling so hard in such a traumatic time.

Yesterday, I was stationed outside the vaccination centre welcoming people as they arrived.  There were nearly 500 through the door over the day, which was fantastic.  There were still a few who were unsure about getting the vaccination.  If you haven’t had your first dose and are worried about the negative press, please go along for your appointment and ask the vaccinator about your concerns.  Whatever you want to ask, there is no doubt that someone since December has asked the same question and also no doubt that someone today, tomorrow and any time over the next 6-12 months will ask a similar question.  The vaccinators are medically trained and can give you any advice and re-assurance you need.

We had a few turn up on spec and we were allowed to let 42 year olds and older enter without an appointment.  There were half a dozen or so who didn’t look old enough so, having delicately asked their age, my additional comment “Because if you’re 42 or over, I want to know what face cream you are using!” seem to go down well with a lot of laughter and confession that they were only in their 30s!  Alas, they had to be turned away to await their turn over the next few weeks.   No one was offended or aggressive towards us or grumpy.  Just accepting.

The ethos behind the whole team at the centre is “Be kind”.  Two little words.  If we all actioned this whether it be at the vaccination centres, in shops, in clubs, in pubs etc. wouldn’t the world be a better place?  Human kindness has made an immense improvement since the first lockdown in March 2020.  Let’s do our bit to keep it going and going and going well past 21st June.

Five Months More ….

Don’t worry, I won’t be ruining another song – if there is one called Five Months More!

If we’re playing from now until the end of September, that means 5 months of outdoor bowling.  Let’s hope that North East wind disappears soon!

Now, HUGE apologies to Ann M, who organised a raffle on Saturday and I completely omitted to mention her in  yesterday’s post.  With her lovely hampers, Ann raised a magnificent £166 for the Club from our members and for our members too!  Well done to Ann and Margaret who folded up all the tickets for the draw.  David Pitt shared his prize cakes with us yesterday.

David H is going great guns with the Monday afternoon league teams and now has 8.  It might mean the start date is now 17th May rather than 10th, but we should all remember 17th as it’s the next roadmap date and indoor bowls should be able to start again in some form.

Put an extra jumper on when you go out.  Lovely in the sun.  Very chilly in the shade!
