Hooray for Indoor Bowls!

Waking up to black skies and rain pelting down on the skylights, it comes as a pleasant surprise that the indoor starts today with morning rolls from 10.00 am – 12.00 pm Monday to Friday.  Matches and Leagues will start in October at some point to be advised.

When you go indoors, just remember to caress the carpet as you release the bowl on a much wider trajectory than outdoor grass, then there’s a good chance of it not flying into the ditch!  It can be a tricky transition but still fun!

For those rolling up this morning, there is sherry trifle left in the fridge if you would like some.  Please ask Jane.

Gordon reported from Saturday’s match

The men did win 100-68 but that doesn’t tell the story of a very competitive afternoon with plenty of good hearted banter.

The ‘Witch’s Cat’ Spider was a great success, the Ladies winner was Joan and Barry won the Gents and £40 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Research.  Thank you.

Gym, Brian C, Roy and Anthony took top rink for the chaps.  Well done to them.

The whole afternoon was a team effort from the early arrival of Roy to swish and lay out the green to the team work in the Kitchen to produce a very tasty meal.

As Men’s captain I was very pleased with the spirit the match was played in.

Thanks, Gordon.  Lucy’s report to follow

Have a good Monday!

The Day Went with Fun and a Flourish!

There haven’t been any formal match reports from the Captains yet, but I gather the chaps won on this occasion.  Well done to them.

Texts received “We lost, but we had a lot of fun”.  “We lost by miles but it was a really good afternoon”  “The first of the game was ours.  We had them worried”

and from Jane

A huge thanks to Beryl, Margaret and Ann M for all their hard work in preparing and laying out the post match food and a huge thanks to Cathy T for working with me behind the bar at the busiest time after the match and then to do the pan cleaning.  We would have really struggled without such hard work, supported by Jacquie E.  With help from you and Ange (on Friday) it was a true team effort.

I saw Beryl and Margaret in the car park and they said it was a very good afternoon and “we were thanked and praised for our efforts”.  I also George who was very excited to be taking a large bowl of Sherry Trifle home as well!

Well done to everyone, which includes all the bowlers of course, as without the members, it wouldn’t have been an event at all!

Thank you.

For the record, Mike C & I lost the Mixed Pairs Final.  We started well, the dropped off in the middle losing 1 or 2, then dropped a 5 on about the 12th end.  Not a good time to try and catch up.  Tony Waller & Rose Mayo played better but we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves!

Mike, Dave P and Laurie are all playing in South Middlesex competition finals today at Fordbridge Park.  Play starts at 9.30 am and the weather is going to be warmer than yesterday, so I’m sure they would appreciate your support.

Meanwhile at CP, Di S and Dawn are playing the 2020 Club Ladies Singles Final.  The winner goes into the National Champion of Champions, the entry for which has to be in by tomorrow, hence the last minute match fixture.

The Day is Here!

Good luck to everyone playing this afternoon and good luck to Jane, Ann M, Beryl and others looking after you all.

16C but muggy out there at the moment.  Temperature going up to 20C and no rain forecast – according to Alexa, but we know she doesn’t always get it right!

Please send your match reports – it can be from any/many of you from any perspective!

Good luck to Dave P in his Middlesex League Semi-Final this morning and hopefully final this afternoon and to Mike and sub Dawn in the Mixed Pairs Final.

And, finally, whatever you’re doing, HAVE FUN!

Friday Again

Only another week before September ends.  It’s scary how this year has flown by and we’re just one match away outdoors before the green gets put to bed.  Indoor bowls has been open for quite a while but I believe the morning roll up sessions will start in earnest next week.

The bar is coming along and we are just waiting for the brewery to come and move the pipes from the cold store under the floor in the holes that are ready.  We are just asking for your continued patience until the work is finished.  Jane is doing well flitting between bar, kitchen and cold store depending on where the glasses and products are.

Tomorrow the afternoon will start off with a ‘spider’.  For those not familiar with this.  Each person taking part stands with one foot in the ditch (please be careful) and one bowl in hand spread out around all four sides of the green.  The ‘spider’ is placed on the jack in the middle of the green.  On the word “GO”, every bowls towards the spider.  The bowl that finishes nearest the spider wins a bottle of wine – one for the men and one for the ladies.  Sounds easy?  It’s anyone’s win as the jack invariably gets pinged in different directions!  £1 a go and even if you’re not playing in the match, you are welcome to take part.

Gerry has kindly offered to collect match fees (£5) and someone will come round the green to collect your £1 spider donations

The ladies have a couple of changes to the team and Lucy is Captain of the day.  Ange slipped at home and is unable to play or serve up the food so Ann Macey and helpers will be taking on the post match food mantle.  If you can clear up your bits and bobs as you go, it would be appreciated.

Anyone applying to be an HGV driver?  There seem to be plenty of vacancies!

Still on Outdoors but for 2022 Competitions! Entry Deadline 20th October

Norman now has the forms for the 2022 Bowls England and Middlesex Competitions.  These need to be returned to him with the fees by 20th October, please.  That’s just short of 4 weeks.

You will notice the ends for all except the singles are 18 and the pairs are back to 4 bowls each and the triples 3 bowls each.

I’ve attached the pdf versions if you find them easier to download or jpg’s if not!  Hard copies are available in the Clubhouse if you prefer.  You see, we can cater for all your needs!

(The pdfs will be a better quality than the jpgs if you print them off.)

National & Middlesex Competition Form 2022 – Ladies

National & Middlesex Competition Form 2022 – Men

Ladies – 2022
Men – 2022

(I don’t think the Bowls England individual competitions – e.g. Senior Singles, Senior Pairs, Mixed Pairs or Mixed Fours are out yet.)

More Finals!

Spotted on Facebook that Richard Duke is playing Trevor Grover in the FIrestone Final on Saturday.  I’m sure Richard is hoping for a win as Trevor and his partner beat Richard in the semi-final of the Men’s Pairs.

Dave Pitt plays Kai Matthews (who beat Kevin Keown in the semi-final) in the Gillette Cup tomorrow at Bishop Duppas.  These are both South Middlesex League individual competitions.

Also on Saturday, the Coopers play the FInal of the Middlesex Mixed Pairs v Tony Waller & Rose Mayo.  In fact all the remaining finals will be played on Saturday at Bounds Green starting at 10.00 am.  We wish everyone well.

Meanwhile at 2.30 pm, we’ll be facing a hard contest at Cambridge Park with our own FInal when the Men taking on the Ladies!  If anyone hasn’t signed up for food, please let Ange know this morning as she will be sending her chaps off to Costco to do the shopping.

Beware wearing socks on your feet if you have wood floors.  If you slip and fall, it hurts.  The floor shows no sympathy!

We’d Like to Report a Win …

… but it was a win only for Gordon, Tricia and Steve P in the South Middlesex League match yesterday.  The rest of us went down and Hounslow Cons were worthy winners on the day.

On the plus side, the morning drizzle stopped just as we started play and although the sun didn’t quite break through the clouds, it wasn’t cold.

Gordon and I are nearly there for the team selection for Men v Ladies on Saturday.  It looks like it will be 4 rinks and 1 triple.  We will try and get the teams out later today.

Work on the bar refurbishment goes ahead and we still are hoping for it to be just about finished for the AGM on 30th September and Race Night on 1st October.

Talking of the AGM, there are still committee and Board places in need of nominations.  Please have a think at whether you or someone you know well would like to be part of the team taking the club forward indoors and outdoors.

Bowls England Plans for 2022

PLANS FOR 2022 DOMESTIC SEASON ANNOUNCED

15th September, 2021 by The Communication Team

We are delighted to have been able to deliver a full season of domestic competitive events in 2021, culminating in our National Finals in Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa.  The season provided a number of challenges as we sought to enable all bowlers to participate safely whilst navigating through the gradual relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions.  We thank everyone for the part they played in a full summer of competitive bowls.

The introduction of shorter formats in all events provided the maximum flexibility for players, clubs and counties to arrange their respective matches.  The change in format has led to a healthy debate on our national competition programme and, building on previous insight, we have digested the recent survey which was completed by both current and prospective participants.

As part of our core aim to grow participation in lawn bowls, a priority is to deliver an annual programme of national competitions which provide a structure and environment for all players to feel challenged, rewarded and committed to our sport.  This involves satisfying the needs of existing competitions entrants, whilst ensuring competitions are accessible for as broad a range of bowlers as possible.  There is little doubt the number one barrier to people entering competitions, or entering more competitions, is pressures on their time.

To that end, our outline plans for 2022 were sent to all county associations last week and, following their feedback, we are pleased to share them more widely.

National Finals 2022

We have repeatedly outlined that 2022 is a challenging year for the domestic calendar, and we have been advised that Birmingham 2022 has use of the Victoria Park venue until Thursday 18th August. Building in venue set-up time, the indicative dates for the Bowls England National Finals are Thursday 25th August to Sunday 11th September inclusive. We will be meeting with Birmingham 2022 and Warwick District Council to confirm this and are mindful of the challenges of the later date on players and spectators.

We will be reflecting on this year’s National Finals and making improvements based on your feedback.  We aim to go on ticket sale for the 2022 National Finals before the end of 2021.  Please sign up to our Jack newsletter for updates.

National Championship 2022 – Formats and Qualification

Following an analysis of the survey results and feedback from counties, we will be running all the National Championships using the following formats:

  • Singles (including Junior Singles) – 21 up
  • Pairs (including Junior Pairs) – Four bowls 18 ends
  • Triples – Three bowls 18 ends
  • Fours (including Senior Fours) – Two bowls 18 ends
  • Two-bowl singles – Two bowls 21 ends

For the integrity of the events, the same format must be played at all stages of the Championships including county qualifying rounds.  As in 2021, there will be 48 qualifiers for the National Finals in Championship events. The 13 counties with the most entrants in each event will receive two qualification places.

The closing date for receipt of qualifier information from counties to Bowls England will be Monday 8th August 2022.

Inter-County Events

To provide more space in the competition schedule, the Middleton and Johns will remain as knock-out competitions and the Finals will be played as part of the 2022 National Finals.  Qualifying for the Balcomb Trophy, Walker Cup, White Rose Trophy and Amy Rose Bowl will also remain as knockout as in 2021, but the Regional Finals for the respective events for each gender will be on separate dates. We shall circulate the programme for inter-county events next month once the wider National Competition programme has been confirmed.

National Competitions and National Finals Schedule 2022

Based on the feedback and the logistical challenges of fitting around Birmingham 2022, we will spend the next few weeks working on the following:

  • Developing the National Finals schedule to maximize the number of players taking part and enhance the spectator experience
  • Formats of play in National Competitions and the point at which each competition proceeds to the National Finals
  • Introduction of regional stages of National Competitions to reduce travel time for players and to take advantage of staging local events around the Commonwealth Games
  • The financial viability of additional live streaming during the 2022 National Finals

Entries for National Competitions will be opened once this work has been completed, which we anticipate to be towards the middle of October.

International Events and Commonwealth Games preparation

Discussions regarding the British Isles events (Championships and International Series) are ongoing between the nations that form the respective organising bodies regarding plans for 2022.  Details will be circulated once finalised.

More broadly, the England squad’s preparations for Birmingham 2022 will become more intense as we get closer to the Games.  We will be organising the international schedule once we are clear about the domestic calendar, working with all stakeholders to ensure our players are well-prepared mentally and physically for a home Games.

Autumn Counties Meeting

We will be meeting with Counties in the autumn to explore some of the outstanding areas of discussion for the 2022 National Championships, Competitions and Finals, as well as looking forward to 2023 and beyond.

We will continue to assess the merits of changes made to competitions, digest feedback from players about their experience of playing in national competitions and ensure our competitions programme meets the needs of participants and Bowls England’s strategy.
